Let me start by saying that you don’t have to use a Craft name to practice Magick. I didn’t have one when I started my path, and I had no intention of taking one at that time. But one morning, my wife and I were taking a walk when a group of crows landed mere feet from us. We stopped, and both of us were in awe; the crows were looking right at us. Soon after that, two crows took up residence in a tree very close to our home. They would always caw as I was coming home from work or running errands. Many days, one of the crows would perch in a tree above our patio and caw until I came outside. And, sometimes, one of the crows would perch in a tree above where I grill and caw. It became very apparent that my spirit animal had chosen me.
I began reading about crows and studying them—and I quickly learned that I have traits very similar to theirs. Crows are messengers, problem-solvers, and they have extreme loyalty to their family. With that understanding and my love for the moon that has existed from my childhood (long before I became Wiccan), I chose to take the Craft name Crow Moon.
Since then, I have found myself constantly surrounded by crows when I’m out-and-about; they often fly above me as I walk to the grocery store. Some have landed atop a street light as I waited for the next bus to come—almost as if they were waiting with me or watching over me. Sometimes their caws cause me to look up and see the moon! I placed representations of crows and the moon on my altar, and I spend a lot of time communing with both in my practice.
So, if you’re on the hunt for a Craft name, be sure to pay attention to the elements and spirits around you. Your Craft name might very well choose you, too.
